Martina, Karo and Lissy – that’s our “Dreimäderlhaus” (team of three girls). We get stuck in, cook really well and enjoy chatting with you over a glass of Prosecco. We are also really fond of children and animals.

Sustainability at the Hotel Obereggen

To ensure that we act responsibly towards people and nature, we have implemented various initiatives to reduce our ecological footprint. Our historic farm has already been organically certified for over 25 years and is run using organic methods. Environmental protection and sustainability are like tradition here.

We are committed to this issue through both large (resource-saving snow machines in the ski regions) and small measures (from separating rubbish to eco-certified soaps, shampoos and shower gels).

We attach a lot of importance to sustainable energy carriers and only use green power from hydro energy. Our entire hotel and the farm are heated using our own wood chip system, so we use waste from the timber industry.
Quality products instead of cheap products, because sustainability and fairness are not cheap.
We place an emphasis on regionality. That means short transport routes so that the added value remains in the region. South Tyrol is free of genetic technology. Weg et most of our products from family-run business that produce with a great deal of passion. A love of the product and a love of traditional craft that you can taste.
Animal welfare and quality are important to us. That is why we get our milk products, and our cheese, from the MILA, the farmers’ cooperative in our valley. The MILA farmers have an average of 12 cows.
We buy drinks in reusable glass bottles instead of Tetrapack or disposable plastic, where possible.
We personally buy fruit and vegetables in the market hall. So we can directly check the origin and quality. We always choose regional products over non-European ones.
We try to avoid individual packaging when buying goods and at the breakfast buffet, if this is possible from a hygiene perspective.

All of our serviettes, straws and toilet paper are 100% recycled. Guests will find in their rooms shower gel, shampoo and soap from then Ecocert-certified "Osme" range. The products are all without parabens, silicone and artificial colours and are based on aloe vera and other plant-based ingredients. Our cleaning products from Hygan, a company that manufactures in South Tyrol, which also means short transport channels. Biodegradable raw materials form the basis of their products.

To ensure that environmental awareness isn’t just limited to food, we properly separate rubbish and focus on recycling: waste, organic waste, glass, ceramic, cardboard/paper, hard plastic containers etc. are separated. 100% of hard bread is reused and organic waste (including our eco serviettes) is taken to our biogas system, where gas and compost is produced.
Our animals love their outdoor enclosures and enjoy together the natural herd life and in summer our green meadows with an incredibly variety of grasses, flowers and herbs – something unique in times of extensive agriculture. In summer, our horses replace the lawnmower and their dung the fertiliser.
Our ski region is run in a sustainable manner, namely only with green energy from South Tyrolean hydro energy. And the excess off-peak electricity is mainly used to produce snow.

We are still planning many further steps and are looking forward to the future.

More than 50 years of the Hotel Obereggen

Our history

One single road went from Rauth to Obereggen, to the left and right was snow. The path? Just cleared enough for the width of a VW Beetle; two cars were one too many. The sleepy mountain town consisted of meadows and woods, a few farms and one single guesthouse, the Gasthof “Obereggen”. That was us.

There were no more than 20 beds for the guests. The second path, from Eggen via the Gasthaus Wagger to Ortner, was unnavigable in the cold season. Whereas people could ski in the other South Tyrolean municipalities, Obereggen was in hibernation and waiting for summer to return.

The only sounds were of birds twittering and cows mooing. Peaceful. It was exactly this sense of calm that visitors from Bolzano and North Italy were seeking when they came to stay with Eduard Pichler (“uncle Edl”) and his wife Lina at the Gasthof Obereggen. The guesthouse: an architecturally interesting construction. The guesthouse was the only place to stop for a bite to eat in Obereggen, so the pair were not faced with any competition

Obereggen developed over time

In the 1950s, tourism in Obereggen was shaped by one name: Zerbi. The large family from Lombardy, whose descendants still enjoy coming to Obereggen, had spent the summer in Obereggen every year since 1936 with just a few interruptions during the Second World War.

Back then, the Zerbi family always enjoyed spending time with uncle Edl and Lina from mid-July to the end of August. The family was always accompanied by a “padre” (priest) and had found their paradise below the Latemar and enjoyed their holidays away from the hustle and bustle.

Tradition that it’s good to look back on

Today, people enjoy looking back on the cosy and social get-togethers in the parlour and on the sunshine panoramic terrace of the old Gasthof Obereggen.

When winter came, it was still quieter than it already was in Obereggen in summer. Nobody thought that Obereggen could one day become a famous skiing destination.

The first lifts

The first lift and slope were brought into operation in 1972. In 1975, the ski region was connected with Pampeago and Predazzo via four new lifts. The Latemar ski centre was born. Since 1983, the famous Europa Cup races have taken place in Obereggen.

Renovation work in Jahre 2001 transformed the once small Gasthof Obereggen into a 3-star superior hotel.

Our individual hotel, a gem

In 2003, the Hotel Obereggen was passed on within the family. In 2005, we undertook a lot of high-quality renovation work: restaurant, organic suites and alpine wellness area.

The Latemar, a UNESCO jewel

Despite all the infrastructure, the ski region around Latemar has remained a natural paradise that can claim to be part of the UNESCO world heritage site of the Dolomites. Attention has always been paid to carefully embedding the lifts and ski slopes into the natural terrain.
